“Once the soul awakens, the search begins and you can never go back. From then on, you are inflamed with a special longing that will never again let you linger in the lowlands of complacency and partial fulfillment.”
– John O’Donohue
Have you ever felt a sense of deep awe and joy? Was there a time when you were in a space either physically, or within your mind, when you felt alive? We often find that place in nature or with loved ones, or when we have been a part of something really meaningful. We feel like something has touched our inner soul. And our soul holds the light that awakens us. One experience that touches my soul is when I watch flash mobs in malls, on trains, or at airports singing. Everyone in harmony with each other and singing joyfully. I can feel that joy through my whole body. It touches my soul because the singing radiates meaning, love, kindness, acceptance and joy all at once.
What sparks that feeling of aliveness is unique to each one of us. When we feel alive we have touched something very deep within us. We often lose our way to what makes us feel alive because our culture smothers us with ideas of what should make us happy. Once we get past what is being pushed on us by the outside world, we are able to go within and find what it is that our self longs for. What has real meaning for us. What brings us the feeling of being alive.
The soul is the essence of who we are. Once we touch it we meet our true self. From this place of clarity we can make better choices about how we want to live our lives.
When we begin to write freely without thinking, or intuitively build a collage with paint and mixed media, we are creating an opening that allows us to dive deeper into our soul.
